WHAT CAN I DO TO PREVENT
CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT?
The prevention of child
abuse and neglect is possible,
but it requires active involvement of the whole community.
In your home:
Make an effort to spend more "quality time"
with your children.
Listen to their thoughts, dreams and concerns.
Eat meals together as a family, without the
interruption of TV or phone calls.
Express feelings in words - not in fits of anger.
Laugh with your child every day.
In your neighborhood:
Volunteer at your local child care center or other programs serving
children and families.
With help of local resources, sponsor a child abuse prevention program,
at your next PTA-PTO meeting.
Encourage your local recreation center or library to create a study
corner with materials on family issues, positive parenting and nurturing
children.
Ask local retailers to print a child abuse prevention message on their
receipts or use a prevention ad in their grocery cart advertising space.
Where you worship:
Encourage your place of worship to sponsor activities that family
members can enjoy together.
Invite local experts to speak to your congregation or adult education
classes on child abuse prevention and treatment.
Volunteer to help with child care at your place of worship.
Encourage them to provide day care for low-income children.
At your workplace:
Encourage your employer to provide
volunteers or financial assistance to local programs helping children
and families.
Help plan a lunch-time presentation
on child abuse and neglect prevention.
Encourage your employer to post or
distribute information about available community resources for families,
including after-school programs, parent support groups, parenting
classes and substance abuse treatment.
