Clues to Recognizing Neglect

 Physical Indicators:

• Chronic un-cleanliness or poor hygiene, including lice or scabies

• Severe or untreated diaper rash, bedsores or body odor

• Unsuitable or missing articles of clothing such as underwear, socks or shoes

• Overdressed in hot weather

• Untreated illness or injury

• Prolonged exposure to the elements - sunburn, colds, insect bites, etc.

• Height and weight significantly below the average level

• Lack of immunizations

Behavioral Indicators:

• Unusual school attendance, frequent absences, tardiness, arriving early or leaving late

• Chronic hunger, tiredness or lethargy

• Begging or collecting leftovers

• Substance abuse

• Assuming adult responsibilities

• Reporting no caretaker in the home

• Vandalism or delinquency
